Get published

Do you have a passion for writing? Do you want to share your thoughts with other? Would you like to publish your work in the Voice of Unity? If so, we are always looking for people to write articles and submit their work. One of the aims of the VOU is to be a platform for Muslim youth to voice their opinions as well as develop their talents.

General guidance

  1. You can get an idea of what we publish by browsing through the different sections of this website. We generally cover a wide range of topics that could of of interest to British Muslim youth.
  2. As well as articles, we also welcome opinion/comment pieces as well as poetry and short stories.
  3. We hope to encourage originality and innovation so we usually only accept original work that has not been published elsewhere. Exceptions are made at the discretion of the Editor.
  4. Quality is what we’re looking for! Not everything submitted will be published, however we always hope to provide feedback.
  5. Articles are usually between 600 – 2500 words long. There are no strict rules though.

What can I write about?

We generally find that its best to for people to explore their areas of interest or subjects they’re passionate about. Nonetheless it is helpful to briefly outline our different sections:

  • Community
    Here you will find topics on the theme of society and community issues. What is important to young people nowadays? Advice for students and general career guidance too. How about highlighting the events and activities of our communities?
  • Religion
    In this section you will find articles about matters of doctrine, exploring religious themes as well as practical advice. The Faith sub-section specifically takes a Quranic verse or a narration and seeks to understand them in detail. The Fiqh section considers jurisprudential issues.
  • World
    Topics such as politics, current affairs, important world developments and so on.
  • Culture
    We are always encouraged to broaden our horizons. This section looks at cultural and historical themes as well as Travel pieces.
  • Science
    A more scientific and technical section. Perhaps you’ve come across something interesting in your studies or work worth sharing? The latest technology issues? There is plenty of potential here.
  • Comment
    These are general opinion and comment pieces similar to what you’d find in newspaper columns and blogs. Editorials by the Editor are also here as well as Letters to the Editor.
  • Reviews
    Anything useful and interesting can be reviewed! Books, films, plays, documentaries, DVDs and so on. Or perhaps you’ve been to an event or a conference recently. The Profiles sub-section considers specific personalities, organisations or projects of interest.
  • Literary
    Your poetry and short stories.

How to submit

You can contact the VOU Editor via email at. If you have written something then please do attach it. Alternatively if you just have some ideas at this stage we can discuss and develop them with you before you write anything. It is highly recommended to contact us as early as possible to have enough time to draft and improve articles.

The VOU publishes articles regularly. As soon as we have something that we are happy with then it will be published on the website. There are no deadlines.

Share your photos

There is plenty of talent in our communities in regards to photography, art work and graphic deisgn. It would be great to share this by publishing such work on the VOU.

Perhaps you have some inspiring photography from recent travels or you just prefer to express yourself through art. Get in touch via email ator alternatively submit your images for our next issue using the form below.

Ideas for the VOU

Do you have a great suggestion for the VOU magazine? Or perhaps its just a small change but could be very useful.? We’d love to hear about any ideas that could help make the Voice of Unity better for our readers. Get in touch and send us your message through the Contact page!

Join the team

We are always looking for talented and enthusiastic people to volunteer with our Editorial Team.  Ideally you would have a good standard of English (at least a ‘B’ grade at GCSE) and be interested in reading and writing. You would need to commit a certain amount of time per week to getting involved in the various tasks to help run the magazine. Some of the things that you could do include:

  • Researching and writing articles yourself.
  • Sourcing, editing and proof reading articles submitted by other authors.
  • Searching for images to go with each article.
  • Helping to update and maintain this website.
  • Market the VOU to get companies to advertise with us.
  • Promote and market the magazine to increase readership.

No matter where you are in the UK you can get involved as most of our work is done online. Team meetings are usually held in London but other members of the team can join in online. Whatever you are passionate about we can find a role for you and help you develop your skills and get valuable experience.
